“I Was Just In a Car Accident. What Do I Do?”

Car Accident

After a car accident, the most important thing to do is to get the medical attention that you need.  If you do not need immediate medical attention there are a few things that you can do to assist in getting the damages covered.  Here are the top 5 things we recommend that you do after being involved in a car accident.

  1.  Again, get medical attention.
  2. Take pictures of the cars involved, the scene, and any visible injuries.  After the cars have been removed and the scene has been cleared the evidence will likely not be the same.  It is helpful demonstrate exactly what happened with photographs (or video).
  3. Speak to people at the scene.  If there are witnesses, it is important to get their names and contact information.  Often, witnesses leave the scene of accident before the police arrive.  They have useful information but no one knows who they are or how to contact them.
  4. Even if you do not feel that you have major injuries, go to an emergency room or urgent care to get checked out.  If your car is insured in Florida, you have at least $10,000 in insurance coverage after a car accident.  However, you must get to a doctor within 14 days or you could lose all or part of your coverage.
  5. Once the scene is clear and you are stable, contact your insurance company to report the claim.  No matter who caused the accident, you must always report the accident to your insurance company.
